Featured Artist: Carol Smith Carol Smith learned to sew at an early age and was introduced to quilting in 1975 when she took an Adult Education class in Sacramento. She has learned various aspects and techniques of quilt making from many talented teachers, including Helen Hardwick, Eleanor Burns, Don Linn, Harriet Hargrave, Marcia Stevens, Alex Anderson, Marsha McCloskey, Blanche Young, Lucy Hilty, and Lois Christopher.
In 1990 Carol started a home-based business, Granny Smith Quilts, using a “short-arm” commercial-type quilting machine, and continued for over 10 years. She currently uses an Innova “long-arm” machine for quilting her pieces. Her work has been exhibited in Canada, Missouri, at PIQF and in many local shows in Northern California. She is a California State Fair award winner and is listed in two “Who’s Who” publications. Since retiring from the City of Sacramento in 2008, her quilting activities have become a quilting ministry as she makes quilts and other items for her church, guilds, and other charitable organizations. She has also taught multiple beginning sewing and quilting classes, where her mission is to teach quilting techniques to others, introducing them to the endless possibilities of creativity, personal service, and satisfaction through the art of quilting.
In 2012 Carol completed “A Course on Judging Quilts and Wearable Art” from the West Coast Quilt Judging Academy. She lectures and conducts workshops for guilds on “Quilt Judging” and has assisted in the judging process for car shows, county fairs and quilt shows.Carol is a charter member of the River City Quilters’ Guild in Sacramento and Flying Needles Quilters’ Guild in Woodland, having served on the Executive Board of both guilds for many years. She also belongs to a mini-group, the Granny Smith Quilters, which has been together for over 20 years, quilting and enjoying mini-retreats with each other. Carol lives in Elverta with Larry, her husband of 46+ years, and their kitty, Mr. Carroll Shelby.
The River City Quilters’ Guild chose Carol as the Featured Artist for 2017 40th Anniversary show because her passion for quilting shines through every day. In addition to her active participation in guild life, she is a mentor, teacher, judge, lecturer, and actively participates in the sewing ministry at her church. She is a prolific quilter, demonstrating many styles and a variety of techniques in the numerous quilts she has created in the 40+ years since she started quilting.
