Quilt Show Judging Information The RCQG quilt show is judged by the Elimination Method. Awards are given in each category at the sole discretion of the judges who may select 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mentions. Attendees cast their votes in choosing the Viewer's Choice (Harriett Merriam Award). Be sure to cast your vote before leaving the show. We have two awards that are voted on by the membership: Members Choice and Theme Challenge Award. Each judge has selected a quilt as their "Judge's Choice" which is identified by a special ribbon. We are pleased to have the following outstanding quilters judge our show: Judy de Boer, Donna Goodland, Laureen Neilly, and Jody Ohrt. Judy de Boer's love of textiles, and intrigue with the sewing machine began in elementary school at her grandmother's treadle, and her mother's 'modern', dark brown Kenmore sewing machines. She was a member of 4-H, sewing clothing through the high school years. Later, quilting about one quilt per decade until the rotary cutter was invented and she found a quilt guild. Judy’s quilt guild awakened all the latent creativity that she had to put on hold while her family was growing up. Suddenly, she couldn't learn it all fast enough! Curiosity about what quilt judges looked for, and how they decided which quilts received the awards, propelled her to the Northern California Quilt Council's judging class in 2003. She has been judging in various venues since that time. She is currently working to become certified as a quilt judge by the National Quilt Association. Donna Bruner Goodland has been an avid needleworker since the age of 8 years and exposed to quilting and quilters her entire life. She became personally involved in the art of quilting in 1983 concurrent with her retirement as founder/owner/ operator of "The Nine Stitches - - Needlework Studio & Supplies" in Yreka, California. She had the distinct privilege to be one of the applique artists invited to contribute to The California Sesquicentennial Quilt 1997-1998. Donna successfully completed the National Quilt Association's "Two-day Course on Quilt Judging" in Reno, Nevada in 2000 and "A Course on Judging Quilts & Wearable Art" offered by the Northern California Quilt Council at San Rafael, California in 2001. Donna and her husband together raised three children; she is now widowed and comes to us from Yreka, California. Laureen Neilly began making quilts 16 years ago while living in Seattle, Washington. Her work incorporates the use of both traditional and contemporary techniques, and the pieces range in size from small wall hangings to large bed quilts. Laureen has designed and constructed numerous quilts and patterns for P&B Textiles, a fabric company in Burlingame, CA. Several of these quilts and patterns have been published in national and international magazines. Her work has been included in juried shows - most notably the International Quilt Festival at Houston, Texas; Pacific International Quilt Festival, Santa Clara, California; and Road to California, Ontario California.
