Breast Cancer Quilt Auction, 2008

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2008

Hi  Everyone,

We’re getting closer and closer to Auction Day.   We know, November 1 is still two months away, but there is lots to do before then so it seemed like a good time for another update. We have about 250 quilts logged in and most are on the auction website.  This is a stunning collection of quilts, so do take a few minutes to visit the website (www.suttermedicalcenter.org/quiltauction) .  You’ll be amazed.  To those of you who have donated a quilt, thank you.

Getting closer to Auction Day means we have many things to do and need your help.  We will hang the quilts at the Sutter Cancer Center on Saturday,  September 27 beginning at 9 a.m.  We will need volunteers to hang the quilts and we will need others  to get the quilts ready to hang.  Some  will be cutting PVC pipe, others threading the pipe with twine and putting the pipes in the quilt sleeves.  We’ll need some folks to log the quilts out and to post signs.  Last auction we even needed a few quilters  to sew on sleeves.  So there is something for everyone to do.

We have split the day into two shifts 9am and 1pm, but come anytime you can.  If you would like to help out, please reply to this e-mail with your name, phone, e-mail address and time you can work.  We will also need some volunteers  on Sunday the 28th, beginning at 10am.  Again,  please let us know if you can volunteer.  You will not necessarily receive a confirmation e-mail.  If you have signed up, just come to the Cancer Center ready to work and have fun.

Here is the auction event schedule.

On-line Auction
We have selected a small number of quilts for the On-line Auction which opens September 1.  The on-line  biddings will end October 24.  Should any of the quilts not sell in the on-line auction, we will put a silent auction bid sheet on them October 25.  All of the on-line quilts will be on display at the Cancer Center  through November 1.  The On-line Auction  website is www.smcfoundation.cmarkert.com  .

Silent Auction
The Silent Auction opens October 1.  The quilts will be on display at the Sutter Cancer Center, 2800 L Street, Sacramento.  The Center is open every day from 7am to 7pm.  There will be bid sheets for each quilt and we encourage you to bid on every quilt that takes your eye.  The Silent Auction will close in sections beginning at 1pm on November 1.

Live Auction
The Live Auction opens at 10am on November 1.  Larry Brasher has eagerly volunteered to be our auctioneer.  Those of you who have seen Larry in action know how much fun his auctions are.  Don’t miss the live auction.

As we get closer to November 1 , we will send out another note asking for volunteers for Auction Day.  If you know now that you would like to work that day, please let us know.
Publicity
Many of you have made beautiful quilts for this auction.  You have done so because you want to support Sutter’s breast cancer patient programs and research.  Thank you.  However, there is more to do.  We need to encourage the public  to come to the auction and bid on the quilts.  Paid advertising is  expensive and the major media outlets offer little free space or air time.  You can help by letting everyone know about the auction.  Word-of-mouth is the best advertising and it is free.  Please spread the word.

The auction publicity committee has been working hard. We now have buyers bookmarks and posters.  We will be sending these to the guild representatives and supporting quilt shops shortly.  Look for them.  We also hope  to send you an electronic version of the bookmark and poster.  Please print some to share with friends, family, and co-workers. Also, don’t be hesitant about asking the shops you support to support the auction by displaying a poster

Our next auction planning committee meeting is September  11 at 5pm in the first floor training room of the Cancer Center.  Everyone is welcome.

Thank you for your support.  We’re looking forward to seeing you no Auction Day , November 1, if not before.
