"BLOCK PARTY" PROGRAM
The “Block Party” program, which got started in March of 2004, is an additional way for RCQG members to help the Community Service Committee bring the comfort of quilts to hospitalized children in our area. Almost every month, the Block Party coordinator, Deirdre Downes, provides a pattern with instructions and some color suggestions for an easy 121⁄2” block to be turned in the following month, to be made into children’s quilts. Many members use their own quilting scraps to make these blocks, while others sign out one of the 25 fabric kits Deirdre puts together for each block. The kits are not only convenient for members but are also a way for the Community Service Committee to find a use for some of the smaller pieces of donated fabric in their collection.
Once the blocks are turned in, Deirdre and a handful of volunteers assemble them into quilt tops with backing and batting, ready for quilting or tying by other volunteers. Over the past year, Block Party volunteers put together 31 quilt tops with the 2004 blocks, and photos for most of these can be viewed below. Photos of quilts made with 2005 Block Party blocks will be posted as they become available.
