"BLOCK PARTY" PROGRAM

February 2005

"Louisiana"

Block size: (12 1/2" unfinished)
Block colors: Blue (or red or purple) and yellow

Fabric for one block:
  • Four 3 1/2" X 6 1/2" rectangles of dark or medium blue print (or red or purple.) (Cut from 3 1/2" X 26" strip or 6 1/2" X 14" strip.)
  • Four 3_" X 6_" rectangles of shirting-type background print. (Cut from 3_" X 26" strip or 6_" X 14" strip.)
  • Eight 3_" squares of yellow or pale gold. (Cut from 3_" X 28" strip.)
Instructions for Flying Geese Units: (While these can be made using any method you prefer, the fabric amounts given are for the method described here.)
  1. If necessary, draw diagonal lines corner to corner on wrong sides of the 3_" yellow squares. With right sides together, match edges of one yellow square with one end of a dark 3_" X 6_" rectangle. Sew diagonal seam from corner to corner of yellow square. Then press yellow fabric over seam line toward corner of rectangle to create a triangle. Trim inner layer of yellow fabric to _" seam allowance.
  2. In the same way, sew another square to the other end of the dark rectangle to create a flying geese unit. Make 4 in all.
  3. Sew a light rectangle to the top of each flying geese unit, as shown in the block illustration. Press toward the light rectangle, so the goose point lies flat.
  4. Arrange the four units according to the block illustration. Join the side-by-side units, matching triangle seams. Press the top row seam to the right and the bottom row seam to the left. Match seams and sew top row to bottom row to complete the block. Press.
