WORKSHOP
Embellishing History: Designing Memory Quilts
In this workshop, we will review design concepts for a memory quilt and then draw up plans for individual quilts. Alone and in groups, the participants will reach into their personal histories (or those of others) to derive inspiration for the quilt. Playing with fabric and photos or other memorabilia will help jumpstart your design. Not to worry, we will work with photocopies. No original photos will be harmed in this workshop! This is NOT a sewing class.
Materials List:
- A variety of fabrics (especially ones you really like), uncut (we won’t be using them up!). For once, size doesn’t matter!
- 2 sets of photocopies or computer printouts of some photos you would like to work with (we may cut these up). They can be the same size or different sizes.
- 1 set should be copied in black and white
- 1 set should be copied in color (if possible)
- We will have some fake family photos for you to work with if you can’t make photocopies
- Other ephemera jewelry, trinkets, tickets, you name it you think your family would let you get away with and put in a quilt (need not be limited to clothes)
- Paper scissors
- Camera (optional)
