PRESENTATION:
Cindy Needham: Thread Facts and Fiction
November 18, 2008 (Tuesday)
See below for workshop

This fun and informative program takes the mystery and frustration out of using decorative threads, identifying and solving thread issues and problems, and teaching about needles and tension.

I have been a quilter for over 35 years with the first 25 devoted to my first love of hand quilting and the last 10 with my second love of machine quilting. Passing on my love of quilting and design through teaching is a dream come true.

I recently left my full time job in the medical field to teach and speak nationally for Superior Threads.  My love of design has led to unique opportunities to design stencils for Quilting Creations, Inc. and whole-cloth designs for Golden Threads.  I have also had several design features in Quilters Newsletter Magazine. My book, Wholecloth Linen Quilts, was released this year by AQS and features a wide variety of linen quilts as well as a large selection of my quilting designs.

WORKSHOP: Open Thread Bar Workshop
November 22, Saturday
10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Price: Members $35. Non-members: $40.
Location: 3235 Pope Avenue, Sac., CA (Map)
Registration / Supply List (below)

This is a very popular class and one-of-a-kind!  This was designed for my work with Superior Threads and fills a large void in the quilting community: thread education.  The morning session teaches the student about thread quality, weight, tensions, needles, working with decorative threads and how to use different threads in design.  The afternoon workshop treats the students to an "Open Thread Bar".  Five cases of Superior Threads are available while the students learn how to use all types of threads at different tensions settings on their own sewing machines.  A panel is created which they will use for reference at home.  I also bring a large collection of stencils if the students wish to create a small whole cloth quilt during their thread play.

I am excited to teach this workshop and know that you will leave with the confidence to use a broad range of thread for your quilting!

The workshop will begin with a brief session where I will teach you how to use specialty threads, how to work with your machine tension and correct needle usage. Some of my whole cloth quilts will be shown to demonstrate different threads and techniques.

You will be treated to an "Open Thread Bar" where you will have a large selection of Superior Threads available to use. You will start on a practice panel where you will learn how changing your machine tension affects the stitch quality on each of the decorative threads. You may work on this for the day, you can graduate to a small whole cloth project or you can learn how to thread play on provided floral panels. I will have stencils available to mark your project and will be there to help with any questions or concerns regarding threads, needles, tensions, etc.

Supplies needed for class~

  1. Sewing machine in good working order and  please bring your manual! If you have a choice, I recommend you bring a machine that does decorative stitches.
  2. Free motion quilting foot. Decorative stitch foot (one that you can use with a zig-zag stitch, etc.)
  3. Needles: Schmetz Topstitch 90/14 and 100/16.
  4. Bobbins: Please bring at least 2 empty bobbins.
  5. Water soluble quilt marking pen.
  6. Extra light if needed.

Optional Supplies:

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the workshop, you are more than welcome to contact me by e-mail at linenqltr@comcast.net. Be sure to reference the class in the subject line.

Thank you! Cindy Needham
