PRESENTATION:
Joe the Quilter: A Musical Quilt Show
February 19, 2008 (Tuesday)
See below for workshop

Joe Cunningham began making quilts professionally in 1979, after a ten-year career as a musician in Michigan. His early mentors were steeped in the history and traditions of quilts, leading Cunningham to a life of study in quilt history and a love of traditional technique. Over the years his work has evolved into a unique personal style both original and shaped by the tradition. Cunningham travels throughout the country to give lectures and workshops on quiltmaking. Joe’s eight books on quiltmaking  include the first biography of a living quilter and a definitive book on marking quilts for quilting called “Quilting with Style,” published by AQS. He has been seen on the HGTV series “Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson,” as well as  “The Quilt Show” with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson.

His presentation for our February meeting is "Joe the Quilter: A Musical Quilt Show", and in Joe's own words,

"Joseph Hedley lived in England from 1750 to 1830. He was known as Joe the Quilter. Learning about him inspired me to become a professional quilter 200 years later. In this show I tell the story of his life, and illustrate the story with quilts and songs. The quilts are my latest, original quilts, made in the style of the original Joe the Quilter.  Unique, fun and  full of quilts, this show is unlike anything you have ever seen. "

WORKSHOP: Elements of Chance
February 20, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Price: Members $35. Non-members: $40.
Location: 3235 Pope Avenue, Sac., CA (Map)
Registration / Supply List (below)

This workshop is based on my way of designing patterns that includes the element of chance. Using my simple technique we will make a small quilt full of life and unpredictably individual. By the end of the class you will be able to design your own blocks and make one of these easy but satisfying beauties.  These two examples were made by quilters in Elements of Chance workshops.

Supply List:

  •  Fabric: At least one yard each of three materials: dark, medium and light. Also, 1 yard of a contrasting fabric. (Bring as much fabric as you like. What we need is contrast.)
  • Rotary cutter and mat.
  • Quilters rulers for cutting. (We will use a 6” square ruler and a longer one for making 1” and 2” strips.)
  • Sewing machine with all materials for a machine sewing workshop: flannel or felt design board, thread, scissors, pins, seam ripper, etc.
